Last Days in Savannah April 21, 2008

Our last days in Savannah went fast. We went to Paula Deen’s restaurant, Lady and Sons and had a really good meal. Below is a picture of the sign outside the restaurant.
Here is a picture of Cindy with the menu — our little piece of history proving that we were there!
We spent some time running down some Forest Gump (the movie) sites — the church spire where the feather was released at the start of the movie and the square where Forest was seated on a bench telling his story. in the process, we ran into a lot of interesting squares and buildings — hopefully I’ll eventually get these uploaded to my internet picasaweb site and be able to give you the url.
We also spent one day going to Tybee Island. We also visited Fort Pulaski on our way to Tybee Island. We visied the beach, saw the lighthouse, then ate at the Crab Shack whose slogan is “where the elite eat in their bare feet”.
All in all, we had an enjoyable time, but both Cindy and I would rate Charleston, SC as a more enjoyable city to visit. Now we’re off to camp at the Georgia Veterans State Park so that we can visit the Jimmy Carter National Historic Site and the Andersonville Historic Site.
Travelling, Itunes, and Blogging April 12, 2008

We’re on the road again — this time to Savannah, GA. Travel by itself will normally cut down on my blog entries, but I now have another issue. I installed the latest version of Itunes and it completely trashed my Itunes library. So for the second time in six months, I’ll have to completely rebuild the library. Yes, I know that I should have backed it up, but when you’ve got close to 10,000 tunes, backing up gets to be a pain. So, I’ll suffer doing the rebuild knowing that I could have avoided the problem. I hope to be back blogging in a couple of days.

I’ve just seen the trailer for the new Indiana Jones movie. It looks like another winner in the Indiana Jones movies.
Looks like I’ll be seeing it when it comes out on May 22.
State Parks near Crystal River, FL January 31, 2008

As we get ready to leave Crystal River, I’d like to tell you about two rather unique state parks — Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park and the Crystal River Archaeological State Park.
The Wildlife Park is an interesting place originally a private wildlife park aimed at tourists in Florida. It now houses everything from injured bald eagles to manatees to a hippopotamus. During the winter, manatees stay here due to the warm spring in the park. My wife and I had a very enjoyable visit to this park. Here are some pictures we took.

The other state park, the Crystal River Archaeological State Park was disappointing. The park is on the site of a pre-Columbian ceremonial site. There is a small visitors center with some displays and some interpretive signs and audio in the park. Unfortunately, if you’ve seen other similar parks, especially Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site in Illinois, this park is very disappointing. Personally, I found the view of the Crystal River the best point of this park.
We’re enjoying our adventure — hope you are enjoying yours.
Work Days January 27, 2008

This will be a very short post. We’re busy doing the mundane things that must be done whether you’re living in an RV or in a stick house. Shopping, paying bills, etc.
Cindy’s trying to take it easy while recovering from her third visit to the dentist over the last two weeks. She’s hopeful that the root canal will solve some long standing issues with her teeth. In the meantime though, she’s going through a rough recovery period.
We’re starting to think about our next stop in Florida which will happen Saturday when we move to Lake Placid, FL.
We’re enjoying our adventure and hoping that you’re enjoying yours! Until next time.

Finally, we’re on the road in our motor-home!! We purchased a Newmar Baystar 3202 in November and took a trial run to Lexington over Thanksgiving to celebrate the holiday with my daughter’s family.
We left our stick home on December 27 to begin our adventure. We (Cindy – my wife, Maggie — our miniature schnauzer, and myself – Jim, the retired geek) traveled first to the St.Louis area to visit friends, then proceeded down I-55 to the New Orleans area. We spent two nights in Picayune, MS in order to visit New Orleans on New Year’s Eve. We then headed to Florida ending up in Crystal River for a month.
I intend to post more on our travel later, but I just wanted to get my blog started again. We’re having so much fun on this adventure that we sincerely hope that our stick home gets sold soon and we can proceed upon this adventure.

We’re still working on the house — putting up a garage now since we’ve discovered that all houses for sale in our area in our asking price range have garages. We’ve had the house up for sale for two months with absolutely no one interested — looks like it’s might take some time to sell.
Nevertheless, we’re proceeding with our plans to buy an rv. First, we were convinced that we would be purchasing a fiver — a fifth wheel, but now we’ve decided to get a class A motor home. We’ve had a couple of missteps, but we’re currently in the process of purchasing one and hope to have it purchased within a week.

For those of us who truly enjoy eating out, hungry.com is now open for business. Although the site has some rough edges, it looks very promising.
The site allows a person to build a database of their restaurants including hours of operation, notes, pricing, favorite meal, and rating. Then, you can use this site to pick a restaurant based upon your preferences for that meal. Futures include plans to enable sharing among the site’s users.
Highly Recommended!

After being satisfied with a previous experience, I ordered Valentine Day’s flowers for the love of my life on the internet from Proflowers. The evening before Valentine’s Day, I received an e-mail with UPS tracking information. I looked up the tracking information to discover that UPS’s web site stated that my flowers would arrive the day after Valentine’s Day.
I sent an e-mail to their customer service at 6 PM the evening before Valentine’s Day. Eight hours later I had an e-mail explaining that UPS’s tracking info was not correct. Later, I received another e-mail from the CEO with a more detailed explanation and the assurance that my order would arrive today (Valentine’s Day). After the second e-mail, I felt assured that the flowers would arrive on time. As I pulled into my driveway, I had to wait for the UPS truck to pull out — the flowers had arrived!!
Thank you Proflowers and especially Bill Strauss (CEO) for following up on my e-mail. You’ve got my repeat business for your customer service as well as making my wife happy with her flowers!
